Rewiring a home can be a daunting prospect for many homeowners. There are a lot of things to consider when planning a full or partial home rewire, but we are here to make the process as smooth as possible.

The first step is deciding on your requirements and preferences for each room. If you are planning your "forever home," getting this right now will save you a lot of future expenses!

Power & Lighting Layouts: Walk through your home and picture exactly what you want. Think about where your TVs, equipment, bedside lamps, and kitchen appliances will go.
Data & Connectivity: How will you be using the internet? We can hardwire data points (Cat6 cabling) for reliable home offices, smart TVs, and Wi-Fi boosters so you never lose connection. Did you want some smart features, there are many to choice from.
Safety & Security: A rewire is the perfect time to upgrade to hardwired smoke and heat alarms, security lighting, and wiring for CCTV or burglar alarms.

Planning stage

There are many considerations before starting a home rewire. For example, earthing arrangements need to be verified, maximum demand needs to be calculated, and your service feed and meter must be checked for suitability.

For you, the very first step is to decide what you actually want. It is a good idea to walk around, think about how you use the space, and draw or list your requirements.

If you are drawing: Use one 'x' for single power points, 'xx' for double power points, and 'o' for lighting. If you have any questions, call your chosen professional.
If you prefer a written list: Name each room and bullet point each item.

From there, you will have a rough idea of what needs installing, which will help the electrician when designing the system.

You must also decide if you want flush wiring and accessories, or if it will be surface mounted. All of this forms into a Spec, giving the designer and installer a good foundation during the design and installation phase.

Installation & work

Once the plan is set and the quote is agreed upon, the physical work begins. A full home rewire is typically split into two main stages: the first fix and the second fix.

First Fix: This is the' messy' part. We route the new cables under floors, through the ceilings, and channel them into the walls to fit the back boxes.
Second Fix: Once the cables are run and any plastering or painting is finished, we return to connect everything up and fit your new sockets, switches, and light
Testing: Each circuit is tested and recorded for Certification.

Lived in properties are ran slightly different and depends on ocupant numbers, requirements etc. This will be planned for in the planning stage.

cERTIFICATION & SIGN OFF

Once the rewire is finished, the installation is fully tested to confirm it meets the latest requirements of BS 7671. Every circuit is checked for correct polarity, earth fault performance, insulation resistance and continuity, using calibrated test equipment. This stage ensures the system is safe, compliant, and performing exactly as it should.

You then receive a full Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC). This includes the inspection schedule, the test results, and formal confirmation that the work complies with BS 7671. It’s an important document for your records and forms the long‑term proof of safety for the property.

As a Part P registered electrician, I also handle the Building Control notification. The rewire is logged through my certification body, and you receive a Building Regulations Compliance Certificate directly from them. This certificate is essential for insurance, renting or selling the property, and demonstrates that the work meets legal requirements.

Finally, we complete a walkthrough of the installation together. I explain the consumer unit layout, how to operate the RCDs or RCBOs, and highlight the locations of alarms, data points, smart controls or any future‑proofing routes added during the project. You finish with a clear understanding of your new electrical system and how to look after it going forward.

Why would my home need a rewire?

Homes wired in the 70s, 80s, and 90s were never designed for modern loads like EV chargers, media walls, induction hobs, smart heating, CCTV, mesh Wi‑Fi, or garden rooms. If your wiring is old, deteriorated, overloaded, or non‑compliant, a rewire ensures your home is safe, efficient, and ready for modern living.

How long does a full rewire take?

Most standard 2–3 bedroom homes take 3–10 days, depending on access and layout. Larger homes, properties with outbuildings, difficult routes, or homes with extensive furniture and fitted units can take longer. I always give a clear timeline before work begins.

Will my home be without power during the rewire?

Power is turned off during the working day for safety. You’ll have power restored each evening unless otherwise agreed. I plan the job so you’re without essential services for the shortest time possible.

Is a rewire messy?

A rewire involves lifting floorboards, accessing voids, and chasing walls. I work neatly, protect flooring, and keep disruption to a minimum. If you’re planning decorating or plastering, a rewire is the ideal time to do it.

Can I stay in the house during the rewire?

Yes! Most customers stay in the property.
